The Golden Ring

Although the Golden Ring of Moscow is best typified by the city of Zagorsk, there are actually many cities and towns which are part of the Golden Ring. During our four years in Russia, we visited Pereslavl-Zalessky, Yaroslavl, Kostroma, Suzdal, Vladimir and of course, Zagorsk. My favorite is Yaroslavl for its many churches, its placement on the Volga, and its age. Yaroslavl is old, being founded in 1010, some 137 years before Moscow. Church of the Epihany, Church of the Prophet Elijah, and the Monastery of the Transfiguration of our Saviour are but a few of the sights of old Yaroslavl. It is truly one of the most beautiful of the old cities of Russia and one that is not often seen by most tourists as it is so far from Moscow or St. Petersburg, the usual tourists stops. Colorful photographs of the sights of the Golden Ring can be seen in the publication “the Golden Ring” Aurora Art Publishers, Leningrad, 1976, 1988. Here is one of the churches in Yaroslavl.
